Window Diagram

the part of the window which lies across the top of the frame.

to the multiple vertical segments that make up the sides of the frame itself.
3. The
entire area where the window sash and door panels are located is called the Frame.
4. Glazing can
refer either to a window's glass or the process of putting glass into the window.

simply an individual unit of glass.
6. The
frame that holds the panes of glass, when assembled as a unit is referred to
as the Sash.
7. The Sill is
the bottom part of the frame underneath the window.
8. The Muntin
Bar is a bar that divides window glass.
Common Types of Windows
Awning
Awning windows open outward from the bottom. They are hinged towards the top
anhd will also have lower levels of air leakage. They are essentially similar
to casement windows, but turned on their side. |
|
Bay
Window
One
type of window that is made up of three-plus smaller windows is a bay window.
Generally, the center window will be paralell to the wall it protrudes from,
while the outsides of the other windows will be tilted towards the wall. A bay
window's constituent windows can be of any type. |
|
| A Bow
Window is usually made of at least four windws that are arranged in
a half-circle configuration, radiating from the wall of a building. |
|
Casement
This type of window has
hinged sides and will have a lower incidence of leakage. This is because the
frame and the sash will press together closely and create a better seal. Windows
like this will open outward and give a greater area for ventilation than sliding
windows. |
|
Fixed
Frame
This type of window does not open or offer much ventilation, if at all. |
|
Single-Hung/Double
Hung windows having sashes that move up and down. Among single-hung
windows, only the bottum sash will move upward. You can create a ventilation
area in a window of this type as large as half of the total glass area, and screens
are easily installed. |
|
Skylights are
placed in roofs and have the same angle as the roof they are on. They are usually
positioned to receive as much sunlight as possible, which can bring more heat
and light into your home. Realize that in the northern hemishphere, more sunlight
comes from the north in the winter and the south in the summer. |
|
A Slider or sliding window open with horizontally moving
sashes. Double-sliding windows will move both ways, while in a single-sliding
window, only one will. The ventilation from these windows are regulated by the
space opened by the sashes.
